Oracle Data Safe Components

Oracle Data Safe consists primarily of a database and a web application. The web application is the user interface and is referred to as the Oracle Data Safe Console. The database is a secure and highly available Oracle Database stored on the Oracle Cloud. It stores your service information, such as audit data (trails), masking settings, reports, alerts, and many other things.

The initial size of the Oracle Data Safe database is 1 TB. Oracle Data Safe continuously monitors the usage of the database. When the database reaches 800 GB, Oracle Data Safe automatically increases the size of the database to 2 TB. When the database reaches 1.5 TB, you receive an email letting you know that you've almost reached capacity and how you can file a service request to increase your quota.

When the Oracle Data Safe database reaches 2 TB, audit collection stops and other functions may also fail due to lack of storage space. An error appears in the Oracle Data Safe Console as well. At this point, you can create a service request and explain your usage pattern. Oracle reviews your service request, and if your usage is legitimate, increases the size of your database appropriately. If you exceed the newly set limit, you need to create another service request.

Oracle Data Safe connects to your Oracle databases, including bare metal, virtual machine, and Exadata DB systems, as well as Autonomous Databases. You can choose to use all Oracle Data Safe features with a target database or just certain ones. For example, you may want to use Activity Auditing with one target database and use Data Discovery and Data Masking with another.

Two different protocols are supported for connecting your Oracle Data Safe instance to your targets databases:

  • TCP with network encryption, where your target database has to have network encryption enabled.
  • TCPS, where your target database has to be configured with TLS version 1.2.

Oracle recommends that you back up your target databases when using features like Data Masking. You can use services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, such as Oracle Storage Cloud Service or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Storage Service to back up your target databases.
