Finding Relevant Data

You have three options to find the information you are looking for in Data Catalog.

Search option: You enter the information you are looking for in a search text field to retrieve all data matching the search text in the data catalog.

Browse option: You browse all the data objects created in the data catalog to find the information you are looking for.

Explore option: You explore all data assets to view their data entities and attributes.

Browsing Data Assets

Use the browse data assets option to conveniently view and navigate all the data assets created in the data catalog repository.

Here’s how you browse a data asset :

  1. Access the Data Assets tab by clicking Data Assets on the Home tab or by clicking + from tabs and selecting Data Assets. All the available data assets are listed.
  2. Click Browse. All the data assets in the data catalog are listed in the Browse section. You can also click Browse Data Assets in the Quick Actions tile on the Home tab.
  3. From the Browse section, select the data asset you want to browse.
    • The data asset details for the selected data asset are displayed.
    • The Harvest button is enabled if at least one connection is added for the data asset.
    • If the data asset is already harvested, you can view the extracted data entities and attributes.

Exploring the Data Catalog

You access all the data catalog objects such as data assets, data entities, glossaries, terms, and attributes, and jobs and schedules that you create in the data catalog by exploring the data catalog.

Exploring Data Assets

To explore all the data assets  you create in a data catalog, click Data Assets on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Data Assets.

The Data Asset page displays a list of all data assets in your data catalog instance. Click the sort icon in the header of any column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific data asset by name, in the Search within data assets box, enter a complete or partial data asset name and click the search icon or press enter. The list is refreshed to display data assets that match your search string.

Using the filters in the Filters section, you refine the report to display a specified data asset type, updated by a specified person, and the last updated after and before date. As you apply each filter, the list refreshes automatically. To refresh the Data Assets list at any time, click Refresh.

In the Data Assets list, click a data asset name to edit details for the data asset.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a data asset to perform additional actions on the data asset.

  • Select View to modify data asset and connection details.

  • Select Harvest to harvest the data asset.

  • Select Delete to delete the data asset. A confirmation window displays. Type Delete to confirm you want to delete the data asset and then click Delete. Any harvested data entities or attributes in the data asset are also deleted.

On the Data Assets tab, you can also create data assets and browse data assets.

Exploring Data Entities

To explore all the data entities  you harvest in a data catalog, click Data Entities on the Home tab. Alternatively, click + from tabs and select Data Entities.

The Data Entities tab displays and all the data entities harvested from the data assets are listed. Click the sort icon in the header of any column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific data entity by name, in the Search within data entities box, enter a complete or partial data entity name and click the search icon or press enter. The list is refreshed to display data entities that match your search string.

Using the filters in the Filters section, you refine the list to display data entities from a specified data asset or data entity type, updated by a specified person, and the last updated after and before date. As you apply each filter, the list is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Data Entities list at any time, click Refresh.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a data entity to perform additional actions on the data entity.

  • Select View to modify data entity details.

  • Select Delete to delete the data entity. A confirmation window displays. Type Delete to confirm you want to delete the data entity and then click Delete. Any harvested attributes in the data entity are also deleted.

On the Data Entities tab, you can also classify your data entities by adding business terms and free-form tags to your data entities. See terms and tags.

In the Data Entities list, click a data entity name to view and modify details for the data entity. The Data Entity tab displays and has two sub-tabs.

  • The Summary tab displays the data entity information. You can link terms and tags to a data entity.

  • Click the Attributes tab to view attributes of the data entity. You can link terms and tags to one or more attributes.

    To search for a specific attribute by name, in the Search within attributes box, enter a complete or partial attribute name and click the search icon or press enter. The list refreshes to display attributes that match your search string.

    Click an attribute to open the attribute details tab. The attribute details tab displays attribute information. You can also link terms and tags to the attributes.

Exploring Attributes

To explore all the attributes  you harvest in a data catalog, click Attributes on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Attributes.

The Attributes tab displays and all the attributes harvested from the data assets are listed. Click the sort icon in the header of any column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific attribute by name, in the Search within attributes box, enter a complete or partial attribute name and click the search icon or press enter. The list refreshes to display attributes that match your search string.

Using the filters in the Filters section, you refine the report to display attributes from a specified data asset or data entity type, updated by a specified person, and the last updated after and before date. As you apply each filter, the report is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Attributes list at any time, click Refresh.

To view an attribute's details, click the attribute name from the Attributes list. You can also click the Actions icon (three dots) for an attribute and select View to view the attribute details. You can also link terms and tags to the attributes.

Exploring Glossaries

To explore all the glossaries  you create in a data catalog, click Glossaries on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Glossaries.

The Glossaries tab lists all the glossaries in your data catalog. Click the sort icon in the header of any column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific glossary by name, in the Search within glossaries box, enter a complete or partial glossary name and click the search icon or press enter. The list is refreshes to display glossaries that match your search string.

Using the filters in the Filters section, you refine the list to display glossaries updated by the specified person and the last updated after and before date. As you apply each filter, the list is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Glossaries list at any time, click Refresh.

In the Glossaries list, click a glossary name to view the glossary details.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a glossary to perform additional actions on the glossary.

  • Select View to view or modify the glossary.

  • Select Delete to delete the glossary. A confirmation window displays. Type Delete to confirm you want to delete the glossary and then click Delete. Any terms created in the glossary are also deleted.

From the Glossaries tab, you can also create a business glossary.

Exploring Terms

To explore all the terms  you create in a data catalog, click Terms on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Terms.

The Terms tab lists all the terms in your data catalog. Click the sort icon in the header of any column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific term by name, in the Search within terms box, enter a complete or partial term name and click the search icon or press enter. The list is refreshes to display terms that match your search string.

Using the filters in the Filters section, you refine the list to display terms updated by the specified person and the last updated after and before date. As you apply each filter, the list is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Terms list at any time, click Refresh.

From the Terms list, click a term name to viewview the term details.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a term to perform additional actions on the term.

  • Select View to view or modify the term.

  • Select Delete to delete the term. A confirmation window displays. Type Delete to confirm you want to delete the term and then click Delete.

Exploring Jobs

To explore all the jobs you create in a data catalog to harvest your data assets, click Jobs on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Jobs.

The Jobs tab lists all the jobs created in your data catalog. Click the sort icon in the header of the Start Time or Name column to sort that column in ascending or descending order. To search for a specific job by name, in the Search within jobs box, enter a complete or partial job name and click the search icon or press enter. The list refreshes to display jobs that match your search string.

Using the Status filter in the Filters section, you refine the list to display jobs of the selected status. As you select a job status, the list is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Jobs list at any time, click Refresh.

In the Jobs list, click a job name to view the job details.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a job to perform additional actions on the job.

  • Select View to see the job details.

  • Select Re-run to run the job again.

  • Select Schedule to automate the job runs.

  • Select Delete to delete the job. A confirmation window displays. Click Delete.

Exploring Schedules

To explore all the schedules you create in a data catalog to automate your harvest jobs, click Schedules on the Home tab. You can also click + from tabs and select Schedules.

The Schedules tab lists all the schedules created in your data catalog. To search for a specific schedule by name, in the Search within schedules box, enter a complete or partial schedule name and click the search icon or press enter. The list is refreshes to display schedules that match your search string.

Using the Schedule Start filter in the Filters section, you refine the list to display schedules with the specified start date. As you select a start date, the list is refreshed automatically. To refresh the Schedules list at any time, click Refresh.

Click the Actions icon (three dots) for a schedule to perform additional actions on the schedule.

  • Select Edit to modify the scheduling information.

  • Select Delete to delete the schedule. A confirmation window displays. Click Delete.
